CAPE WINELANDS

Cape Winelands

The mere mention of South Africa's premier wine-producing regions conjures up images of the beautiful upper Berg river Valley, historic homesteads, the towering mountains surrounding Van der Stel's village and the lush vineyard-carpeted countryside flanking the Breede River. Vines also flourish and wine is made in areas beyond these: along the Olifants River, on the wide stretches atop the Cederberg, along the lower Orange river region and the Swartland district, and also in places with names too seldom connected with wine; Lutzville, Traval, Calitzdorp, Vaalharts, Keimoes, Grootdrink, Oudtshoorn and De Rust. In 1656 Jan van Riebeeck planted the first vines for the Dutch East India Company Garden beneath Table Mountain, and in 1659 he was able to write in his diary: "Today, praise be to the Lord, wine was made for the first time from Cape Grapes".

"Wine, like life, is a journey of brief trips and elaborate meanders."- John Platter
