Southern Africa's coastline is home to one of the highest diversity of marine mammals in the world. Most well known are whales and dolphins, of which thirty-seven species are found in the Cape waters. Each year, southern right whales migrate and return to the Cape coastal waters to calve and nurse their young. The massive mammals, mere metres from the shore provide unsurpassed whale watching opportunities between June and November. Humpback whales migrate through the South African region between May and December each year, while Bryde's whales are found slightly further off shore all year round. |
